An integral part of the work of the Intervention Teams is the continuous monitoring of local conditions, the implementation of preventive measures, and the professional management of conflict situations, with one primary objective — ensuring public safety. Their work involves far more than field responses. It also includes advisory and methodological support aimed at finding effective ways to balance human needs with the presence of large carnivores.

Prevention is the key tool for avoiding conflicts. This includes adopting simple and effective measures that contribute to safer coexistence, systematically removing food attractants from populated areas, and developing responsible habits when spending time in nature. These measures can significantly reduce the risk of conflict and promote safe and responsible behavior.

In the event of repeated brown bear sightings in the vicinity of people, members of the Intervention Team carry out the following at the site:

• the collection of footage from cameras, camera traps and other recording devices;
• active monitoring of the site and the wider surrounding area, focusing on identifying the causes leading to the bear’s presence;
• patrol and monitoring activities aimed at identifying the individual bear or bears in question;
• close communication with representatives of the local authority – and, where relevant, with other institutions and state bodies – as well as with the landowners concerned, about the Intervention Team’s ongoing work and the measures being proposed;
• the collection and evaluation of all available data on the movements, location and timing of sightings, damage caused and behaviour of the brown bear in question, in order to learn its habits and determine the locations where intervention could be carried out effectively if necessary;
• patrols aimed at protecting property and ensuring the safety of residents, the application of aversive conditioning to the bear in question, and assessment of the extent of its synanthropisation;
• the application of preventive measures determined by the attractant that has been identified.

If an individual brown bear, or multiple brown bears, fails to respond appropriately to aversive conditioning, removal of the individual or individuals from the population may be carried out when necessary.
