Using bear spray - What is bear spray? Bear spray is used to stop aggressive behaviour in wildlife. It contains capsaicin, a powerful irritant. It causes temporary blindness and disorientation in the animal, thus giving you time to retreat to safety. - How should you keep the spray ready? Bear spray does not belong in your rucksack! Always keep it attached to your belt or within immediate reach. You must be able to use it quickly and without delay. Check the condition of the canister and its expiry date before use. - How do you activate the spray? If you are threatened, grip the canister firmly in your hand. Use your thumb to pull the safety clip towards you and remove it. Hold the spray ready for immediate use. - How do you use the spray correctly? Point the spray at the approaching bear. Ideally, start spraying when the bear is at least 12 meters away. Press the trigger briefly to create a protective cloud of aerosol, forming a barrier between yourself and the animal. - What should you do if the attack continues? If the bear continues to advance, aim the spray directly at its head. The spray’s range is approximately 7 to 10 meters. The total spraying time is approximately six seconds. - What should you do after using the spray? Leave the site immediately and move well away from the area.
